So, here's my take on decorating and real life.
You should always decorate with what you love. It's your home and it should make you HAPPY. What you surround yourself with should make you smile.
Your design should fit in with the way you live your life not a designer's idea of how your life should be.
And, when real life happens it's ok if your home isn't perfect.
If children or grandchildren "rearrange or add" to your decor, sometimes, for your sanity, it's best to just go with the flow. Yes, we should tell our children and grandchildren that writing on walls and furniture is not a good thing if they want to stay in our good graces. Eating at the table is much preferred to eating in front of the tv on your nice rug. But, how about if they want to put an art gallery in your guest bathroom?
I say go ahead! I have one and I smile whenever I go in that room!
I can say with almost 100% certainty that their art will probably not match your decor, that it will not be artfully placed on the walls, and that there will be a LOT of pictures. BUT when my Grandson walked into the bathroom the week after he put up all his art and commented that they were all still there his smile just melted my heart.
Two of my favorites - super heros of course and his rainbow caterpiller! There are a few of my husbands and my drawings on the wall too! How much fun it is to use crayons and makers with a 6 year old:)
The moments we spend creating memories are priceless compared to how a room is decorated. What good is the perfectly decorated house if you are too busy making sure it stays perfect! Real life happens and real life is what memories are made of! Maybe you will have an art gallery somewhere in your home too!
